Waterwalks are based on Anishinaabe ceremonial water teachings. We walk to honour all Nibi (water), to speak and to pray to her spirit; to offer petitions so there will be healthy rivers, lakes and oceans for future generations and our ancestors. People from all nations, all walks of life, are welcome to join us.
In June 2023 we completed the first of a 4 year commitment. Next year, 2024 we will be walking from the mouth of the river at Port Credit along the west side to the headwaters at Island Lake in Orangeville.
Plans are underway for the 2024 Waterwalk which is set for the weekend of June 15th and 16th. Volunteers and donations are welcome. Please contact us to get involved.
Boozhoo kina weya,
My English name is Mary Anne Caibaiosai. I am bear clan Anishinaabe kwe from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, Manitoulin Island. I currently reside in Warsaw, Ontario.
I was led to walk for the water under the guidance and teachings of Josephine-baa Mandamin, our first Anishinaabe water walker.
I continue her work by leading and walking for the waters of the Credit River and the Grand River.
Water Ceremony
All are welcome to participate in a monthly traditional Anishinaabe ceremony on the edge of the Credit River to honour the Spirit of Nibi (water). The ceremony will begin with a smudge; we will pray for the water, sing to the water, and feed the water.
2023 Water ceremony schedule:
July 16th
August 13th
September 10th
October 8th
November 12th
December 10th
Because we are in a specific Anishinaabe Ceremony, women wear long skirts and men long pants to show our respect for our Grandmothers, for Mother Earth and for ourselves.
Women on their moon-time (menstruating) are asked not to join the ceremony as they are in their own powerful ceremony. They can still attend and help with prayers from a distance.
Remember why you are showing up. This ceremony is about Nibi (the water).
Drugs and alcohol are not permitted.
No dogs.
Please remember this is a ceremony, not a photo opportunity or time for chit chatting.
You are welcome to bring a drum or shaker if you have one.
Miigwech.
We meet at 8am in the parking lot on Mary Street in Norval. Known as the Willow Park Ecology Parking (please use this link for GPS)
